Gold sucking technique dredges up controversy

Suction dredge mining is a method of extracting gold from the soil. It was first popularized by the discovery channel show Bering Sea Gold. It entails the miner using a four inch tube to suck up soil and extract gold. "What we've done in our own way is take that ethic of hard work and individualism and trying to make a living by using our skills just like the '49ers did," says Craig Lindsay

However, this mining process has been banned in the state of California critics say that the process stirs up mercury left there by the original miners. "Suction dredge machines suck up that mercury and blow it up into tiny pieces, and those pieces are much more toxic, much more available to be absorbed into the bodies of fish and insects. And when human beings eat fish contaminated with mercury, it's absolutely toxic," said Elizabeth Martin. This ban forces more than 30000 miners to use other methods.

This issue is entirely based on the assumption that this suction method blows up mercury particles into smaller pieces in the process of extracting gold.  The California fish and wildlife board acknowledges that this method does affect the environment, but they are uncertain as to what degree. The simplest solution is to apply a filter which chemically attracts the mercury in the soil and can be replaced when used.

California student in custody after email warned of mass school shooting
a 12 year old student has been arrested for sending an email to a school administrator warning of a mass shooting. This email was sent on Thursday and stated that on Monday February 11 that 23 students and a teacher would be shot. In light of recent events this threat was obviously treated very seriously. The police identified a suspect and executed a search warrant on his home and in the process confiscated several servers, rifles, handguns, and ammunition. The teacher who wishes to remain anonymous for their own safety says that they are on “high alert” after receiving the email. The student was taken into medical custody to evaluate his condition and it has been determined that no one else was involved in the threats.

Terrorist threats executed or not are considered felonies in the state of California and the district attorney will review the case.

This is an example of what I believe is a psychological chain trigger. The media hype about the recent mass shootings has triggered dormant murderous tendencies in mentally unstable people, driving them to at least consider action. It is my hope that I am incorrect about this trigger because if I am correct then there could be an influx of mass shootings in the United States of America regardless of gun control laws.

President Barack Obama says that the boy scouts should be open to homosexual individuals.

For the BSA national executive meeting this week, President Obama has advised that the Boy Scouts open their door to gay and lesbian persons. President Obama states that the Boy Scouts are "a great institution"  and that  “no one should be banned from that.” The Boy Scouts had announced its intentions to consider altering its longstanding ban on gay and lesbian individuals at the next executive meeting. The white house has said before that it opposed the boys scouts denying entrance to homosexuals. The announcement to reconsider has sparked mixed different responses among different factions. The more liberal factions have expressed adulation whole the more conservative side has shown alarm. I have been a member of the Boy Scouts of America for 9 years. I can see how those in favor of gay entrance into the Boy Scouts of America, but the biggest problem is the increased risk of problems developing with sexual harassment. On this subject I have heard various parental conversations between the parents of Boy Scouts in my troop. They state that they would not want a homosexual individual staying overnight alone with their children.

“Hell on Earth Inside Iran’s Horrible Prison”

The Evin Institute in Iran has a reputation to be a prison of horrible proportions. It has come to be a symbol of an oppressive regime that dominates the government. This prison was built during the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.  In the aftermath of the controversial 2009 Iran governmental elections there were several mass protests toward the established powers. The powers that be incarcerated many protestors without reason or trial. One person who was incarcerated was Marina Nemat who was 16 when she was incarcerated in 1981. When she described her experience she said When you clear the gates, you are immediately blindfolded and brought underground,” Nemat told FoxNews.com. “They take you for interrogation. They take you to a hallway and sit you down. You are there for a long time. If you move or say anything you are beaten. You must sit perfectly still, while still blindfolded, and you can wait for hours, days or even weeks.” She said that then captives were taken to an interrogation room. The object is not to obtain information but to make the prisoner admit that they were compromising Iran’s national security. Political pressure has led to the release of some of these prisoners but others still remain.

"And I'm going to focus on the ones that relate primarily to gun ownership and the type of weapons can be owned. And one is, there is a surprising -- so far -- a surprising recurrence of suggestions that we have universal background checks. Not just close the gun show loophole but total, universal background checks, including private sales." This was what vice president Joe Biden stated on his recommendations on firearm regulation.

The public opinion on gun regulation varies widely based on what region of the country you live in. for example if you live in the upper east side of Manhattan you may find the idea perfectly feasible; however, if you live in one of several small towns in West Virginia you would find the idea outlandish and an infringement on your freedoms. In more rural environment you may own one or several guns while in contrast in a more urban environment you may view gun ownership as a proponent to crime.

Personally I develop my opinion on gun regulation by looking at statistics concerning such things throughout history. For example the crime rate in the Washington District of Colombia has fallen dramatically since 2008 when the Supreme Court overturned its gun ban. The murder rates in 2012 dropped to under 100, the first time since 1963. To go to an international scale we may look at Switzerland. This country has incredible low crime rates and every citizen is required to possess an automatic weapon. I realize this two and two may necessarily make four but in this case it is most likely true. To use a quotation that I heard on the radio “guns do not kill people, people kill people.”

As you all know my name is Stephen Fluckey. I was born on November 18, 1996 in Omaha Nebraska. when I was younger I was far more emotional and hyperactive, I attribute this to my residual biological humanity having a stronger hold on my true self, although even as an infant I was described as not needing any affection. I attended St. Philip Neri Elementary and Middle School in a class of seventeen people on average. After graduating sumna cum laude I, as you all know went on to attend Creighton Preparatory School
